Abstract
This survey investigates the associations between two types of adversity,
namely exposure to violence and poverty, and two cognitive abilities that are central to successful
goal-directed behavior and self-control: switching attention and ignoring distractions.

Sample
Panelmembers aged 16 to 60 who consented to CBS microdata linkage. Students living
with their parents were excluded. In the first fieldwork period, respondents from this group who had
completed the same cognitive tests in the summer of 2024 were invited. In the second fieldwork
period, respondents who met the criteria were invited, giving priority to those who had scored low (≤
4) on the “ladder of life” in the core module income (ci23p005, ci24q005, ci25r005) within the past
three years. After that, a random sample of the remaining eligible respondents was added.
